A local instructor told how Pilates saved her from a period when she was “very weak mentally and physically”.

Rachel Plowman, from Insh, runs Lengsten Pilates from her studio in Bogie Street, Huntly, and hosts classes at Gartley Community Hall.
She said Pilates has improved her balance, strength and flexibility, which has made a huge difference in her life during a very difficult time.
“I was very weak mentally and physically,” she said.
“I had to drop out of university, so it took a lot of work to recover.
“During that time I started physio and from there I progressed to Pilates.
“Pilates really supported me through the ups and downs, and still does, because health is never linear.”
Rachel moved to Insh in 2019 and is now a qualified teacher of Body Control Pilates, an exercise designed to be accessible.
She said being a “great teacher” meant that she “fell in love” with the variety of Pilates she currently teaches.
“I love continuing to learn and continue to take courses to develop my teaching and knowledge,” she said.
“Pilates has helped me become more aware of my body, manage my pain, get stronger in a more balanced way, and improve my flexibility.
“From a mental health perspective, it gives you time to step away from the chatter in your mind.
“It requires concentration, and by the end, endorphins are released, the mind becomes quiet, and you feel safe.”
Rachel’s Gartley classes – available to book online by emailing lengthen-pilates@outlook.com – times are 5:50pm and 6:50pm.
She encouraged those interested in Pilates to come try a class or a discounted private session.
