MONTGOMERY – Alabama’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children will change its income guidelines, potentially making more people eligible.

If you are a pregnant woman, a baby less than 6 months old, a breastfeeding woman, or the parent or guardian of a child up to 5 years old, we recommend contacting your county health department.

Many benefits are available for each eligible family member. These benefits include increased cash benefits that can be used to purchase fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables. You will receive $26 per month per child and $47 per month if you are pregnant or postpartum.

Women who are breastfeeding receive $52 less per month. In addition to these benefits, you also receive free nutrition coaching, breastfeeding care, and medical referrals.

The WIC program offers e-grocery benefits to make your shopping experience easier.

The 2024 federal poverty guidelines could make more families eligible for the program. A participant with an income up to his 185% of the federal poverty level can participate in WIC.

The income limits are as follows.

  • Family of 2: $37,814/year/$728/week
  • Family of 3: $47,767/year/$919/week
  • Family of 4: $57,720/year/$1,110/week
  • Family of 5: $67,673/year/$1,302/week
  • Family of 6: $77,626/year/$1,493/week

To be a WIC participant, a family must have limited income and nutritional needs. If a family receives Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the family meets her WIC income eligibility.

“WIC works with families to meet their nutritional goals and provide healthy foods that support optimal growth and development. Nutritious foods help pregnant women deliver healthy babies and support children. It helps children grow into healthy adults,” said Alabama WIC Director Alison Hatchett. “Her WIC program in Alabama understands the challenges many families face in establishing healthy eating habits, and WIC is here to help the women, infants, and children of Alabama. I’m here.”
