Rebecca Elsdon (@reskinclinic_) is an advanced skin specialist and owner of the re/skin clinic in Sheffield, UK.

She has a loyal following on Instagram where she shares her knowledge after nearly 20 years in the industry.

She told US Sun her tips for reversing the signs of skin aging.

beauty basics

Elsdon said skin care routines should be customized to an individual’s skin type and concerns.

But there are also classic products that work for all ages.

“These essential skin care products form the basis of a basic routine to cleanse, protect and nourish your skin,” she said.

“It’s important to choose products that suit your skin type and concerns, and to introduce new products gradually to avoid irritation or sensitivity.

“A gentle facial cleanser is essential to remove dirt, oil, makeup, and impurities from your skin without stripping it of its natural moisture.

“A good moisturizer hydrates and nourishes the skin, maintains moisture balance and prevents dryness.

“Sunscreen is very important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays that can cause premature aging, sunburn, and skin cancer.

“Antioxidant serums with ingredients like vitamin C, vitamin E, and green tea extract can help protect your skin from free radical damage caused by environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays.”

It’s important to remember that patience and persistence are key, as it often takes time to see improvements in skin health.

She revealed two additional ingredients to incorporate into your routine for plump skin and improved elasticity.

“Retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A that stimulate collagen production, increase cell turnover, and help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,” she said.

“Start with low concentrations and gradually increase the frequency as tolerated.

“Peptides are amino acids that stimulate collagen production, improve skin firmness, and help reduce the depth of fine lines and wrinkles.

“Look for moisturizers and serums that contain peptides and apply them morning and night as part of your skin care routine.”

worst viral beauty hacks

Rebecca Elsdon reveals a selection of beauty hacks that should be approached with caution or avoided altogether due to potential risks and lack of scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness.

DIY skin care recipes: “While some DIY skin care recipes with natural ingredients are safe and effective, others can do more harm than good,” she said.

“Mixing ingredients without proper knowledge of their interactions and concentrations can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and even damage.

Use lemon juice or baking soda as an exfoliant: “Lemon juice and baking soda are often touted as natural exfoliants, but they can be too harsh on the skin and can upset the pH balance, causing irritation and increased sensitivity,” says Elsdon. .

Microneedling treatment at home: “Microneedling can stimulate collagen production when performed by a trained professional using sterile tools.

“Do-it-yourself microneedling at home carries risks such as infection, scarring, and damage to the skin barrier if not done properly.

“It’s important to approach anti-aging trends and hacks critically and prioritize science-backed skin care practices.

“Consult your skin care professional before trying any new treatments or products, especially if you have sensitive skin or specific skin concerns.”

simple skin care

Elsdon said lifestyle factors such as staying hydrated, eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and regular exercise are among the cost-effective ways to slow the aging process.

She also recommends wearing sunscreen, managing stress, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

“If you consistently incorporate these lifestyle changes, they can support skin health and potentially reverse the signs of aging over time,” she said.

“It’s important to remember that patience and persistence are key, as it often takes time for improvements in skin health to become visible.”
