WARNING! This article contains spoilers for The Acolyte episodes 1 and 2.

summary

  • Jedi Master Torvin’s meditation created a powerful force field that reflected the special bond between a Jedi and the Force.
  • May needed to get closer to Trubin emotionally, not physically, to break through Trubin’s impenetrable defenses.
  • Acolytes challenge the idea of finding inner peace solely through the Force, as emotional balance is also important.

Star Wars: Acolyte It took one of the most basic Jedi powers and made it incredibly impressive and fascinating. Acolyte The series depicts a very different Jedi Order. Set at the end of the High Republic era, roughly 100 years before the Skywalker saga begins, the Jedi are nearing the end of their Golden Age. Eventually, they become overwhelmed by fear and darkness, and instead of reaching out to the galaxy at large, they turn inward. One of the Jedi Masters in the show already embodies this change:

in AcolyteIn The Force Overdrive, we’re introduced to Jedi Master Torvin (Dean-Charles Chapman), who took the Barash Vows years ago and has been quietly communing with the Force ever since. Though the Barash Vows have a tragic origin, some Jedi use them to seek forgiveness, and it appears Master Torvin did just that. Acolyte It has been shown that a Jedi does not only enter meditative states to contemplate the will of the Force, whether for knowledge or the Oath of Barash.Your physical connection to the Force also seems to become even stronger.

Trubin’s meditation was incredibly impressive.

Meditation is a tool used by all Jedi, regardless of their rank: they get closer to the Force through meditation, they calm themselves, they find strength, and they relax. One of my favorite things about the High Republic era is that it shows how Jedi in a meditative state experience the Force differently — some experience it as a song, others as a tapestry of vibrant colors — and in Torvin’s case, it also seems like he’s able to use the Force in the coolest, most Jedi-like ways.

The force field that surrounded Torvin as he levitated during his meditation was undeniably impressive. It’s believed that Master Torvin took the Vow of Barash to atone for past misdeeds involving May and her sister, likely involving some act of violence. As such, in his meditative state, Torvin was able to create an incredibly powerful force field that blocked out the outside world, like a shield, which in my opinion is something a Jedi should always aspire to be, and perhaps that was what he wanted to be that fateful night.

There’s only one way for May to beat Torbin.

May tried her best to penetrate Torvin’s meditative force field, but nothing worked. The only way to get close to him was to exploit his guilt and need for forgiveness. While the physical world could not penetrate Torvin’s powerful shields, the pain and anguish they both felt could. Torvin’s receipt of May’s poison not only proved how horrific that night had been, The answers to a Jedi’s problems are not always found in the Force, even after years of silence and meditation.

The material world could not penetrate Torvin’s powerful shield, but the pain and anguish he felt could.

I have always believed that the Force should not be relied upon alone to bring a Jedi peace of mind; it is something the Jedi must find for themselves. Torvin channeled the Force for years but never found the forgiveness he was looking for. His physical feats in a meditative state were undoubtedly cool, but I think it is also important to find emotional balance without the guidance of the Force. Torvin may have been very connected to the Force, but Star Wars: Acolyte It just goes to show that immersion in meditation doesn’t solve all of a Jedi’s problems.

The first two episodes Acolyte It’s currently streaming on Disney+, with new episodes released every Tuesday.
