The initiative includes three program pillars and will be open to the public free of charge until June 2025.
HYATTVILLE, Md. — The City of Hyattsville has partnered with Hope Center for Wellness to launch a pilot program to provide free bilingual mental health services to children, youth and families.
City officials hope the program will help address mental health care needs for minority groups who may not be able to get the help they need.
“Hyattsville’s City Council and staff are heartbroken and concerned about the mental health challenges facing children and teens, and we are hopeful that this new program will begin to provide solutions for families seeking life-saving mental health resources,” said Hyattsville Mayor Robert Crosslin.
The initiative includes three program pillars, with programming available to the public free of charge until June 2025. Programs include:
- Individual and Family Therapy: In-person and virtual therapy sessions will be offered in English and Spanish for children ages 6-21 and their families. Participants must be City of Hyattsville residents and have financial need to participate. Registration is currently open. Sessions will begin July 4th.
- Teen Expressive Arts Support Group: A variety of art forms are used to promote self-expression, emotional exploration, healing and personal growth. This program is for middle and high school students who live or attend school in Hyattsville. Registration opens June 17th with the first group starting June 25th.
- Community Wellness Workshops: A series of experiential workshops will provide community members with practical tools and strategies to help them recognize mental health symptoms and connect them to treatment support. Workshops are open to the public. Sessions will be posted at hyattsville.org/calendar.
Under the slogan “Thrive Through Health,” the pilot program is being supported by American Rescue Plan Act funding awarded to the city, and Hyattsville officials hope that by eliminating financial and language barriers, families will be able to access care that previously was unavailable.
