Hospitality specialist Carl Almeida P49 Deesign reveals how to design a spa-like luxury resort bathroom for health and well-being
These days, leisure travelers have higher expectations than ever for luxury accommodations. Carl Almeida, managing partner at P49 Deesign, says there is a greater emphasis on privacy, experience, and overall health, including body, mind, and spirit. The studio, which has offices in Bangkok and Shanghai and has completed more than 300 hotel and resort projects in more than 35 countries, has gained keen insight into what luxury seekers want post-pandemic. I’ve been doing it.
“It’s important to design every detail to create an atmosphere that guests can enjoy and feel luxurious about,” says Almeida. One of her standout examples of this is the resort’s bathroom, which has evolved into a wellness space designed to stimulate and awaken the senses, a personal spa so to speak. Fun fact: Did you know that the word “spa” itself comes from the abbreviation of a Latin phrase? Salus per Aquamdoes this mean “health through water”?
An advanced water experience is a key part of the concept for P49 Deesign at Conrad Resort on Koh Samui, Thailand. The resort’s bathrooms within luxury honeymoon villas incorporate many classy features that enhance the wellness experience far beyond normal expectations.
