How early is it to start using anti-aging skin care products?

There is no perfect age to start using anti-aging skin care ingredients, but most people should start using anti-aging skin care at the age of 20.

However, there are many factors that can influence the best age to start using anti-aging skin care products. Here’s the best time to get started and answers to frequently asked questions about this topic.

Factors to consider

In your 20s, your skin begins to produce less collagen and elastin, which is why anti-aging treatments are often recommended to start at this age. However, there are other factors to consider that can change this recommended age.

  1. Baumann skin type: When you take the Bauman Skin Typing Quiz, you’ll find out that your skin type ends with a “W” for wrinkle-prone, or a “T” for wrinkle-prone. Bauman skin types ending in Ws should use anti-aging skin care regimens that are customized to meet the needs of their specific skin type.

  2. Fitzpatrick skin type: The Fitzpatrick scale ranges from 1 to 6, with 1 being very fair skin that tans all the time but never, and 6 being deeply pigmented skin that never tans. Fitzpatrick types 4, 5, and 6 have more melanin than fair-skinned types and are better protected from sunlight and skin aging. Therefore, people with darker skin may be able to hold off on using anti-aging skin care until their early or mid-30s.

  3. Lifestyle habit: Sunburn and sun exposure, outdoor sports, smoking, poor diet, and chronic stress can all accelerate skin aging. Therefore, teenagers and young adults who have one or more of these lifestyle factors should undergo anti-aging therapy.

  4. Genetics: People with red hair and fair skin are more susceptible to sun damage and skin aging, so ideally they should start anti-aging in their teens.

Is it too early to start anti-aging skin care?

Teens begin using anti-aging skin care around the age of 15 to 16, especially if they have risk factors such as sunburn from outdoor sports, red hair, fair skin, or other factors. The best anti-aging ingredients for 15- or 16-year-olds to start using are antioxidants, vitamin C serums, and retinoids.

Is anti-aging skin care harmful when you’re young?

Teens should avoid using glycolic acid peels and creams, microneedling, and dermarolling. These can damage the protective layers of the skin and are not needed at this young age. Furthermore, anti-aging ingredients such as exosomes, growth factors, and stem cells are not necessary at this age, and no studies have been conducted on potential side effects of long-term use.

conclusion

The single best way to prevent and delay the signs of skin aging is to diligently protect your skin from sun exposure, no matter your age. However, if your child has one or more of the risk factors for skin aging listed above, it may be beneficial to start anti-aging skin care as early as age 15 or age 16.

Otherwise, most people in their 20s or 30s should use anti-aging skin care to maintain the health and youthful appearance of their skin.
