The Office of Horseracing Integrity and Safety and the Jockeys’ Guild will co-host the International Jockey Concussion, Safety and Health Conference at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion in Lexington from Oct. 9 to 11. The event will serve as a forum to explore ways to address the significant mental health, concussion and medical issues affecting Thoroughbred jockeys and other participants in equestrian sports.
“Ensuring our athletes have access to the best resources and protocols for managing concussions and maintaining their overall health is not only a top priority for HISA, it is also a fundamental responsibility,” said HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus. “Our athletes give so much of themselves to racing that we have an obligation to do all we can to support them.”
Terry Mayocks, president and CEO of the Jockeys Guild, added, “The Jockeys Guild has long advocated for programs to support jockeys through the stresses and challenges they face. We are pleased to partner with HISA this year as we further our 15-year involvement in the International Conference on Jockey Health, Safety and Well-Being. We are confident that the insights of this year’s scheduled speakers will inform our joint efforts to further enhance jockey health and resources. Our long-term goal is to expand our mental health programming beyond just jockeys to benefit the entire industry.”
Scheduled speakers include Dr. Margot Putukian, chief medical officer of Major League Soccer, Dr. Steven Broglio, director of the University of Michigan Concussion Center and Neurotrauma Lab, Dr. Shay Dutta, vice chair of the American Academy of Neurology’s Section on Sports Neurotrauma, and Dr. Mark Hart, cardiologist and chair of the FEI Medical Committee.
