HARLINGEN — Time management.

The head of Harlingen High School South’s Class of 2024 said managing time closely is the hardest, yet most important, tool for success.

“I always kept a schedule of everything that needed to be done and finished,” said Emerson Williams, this year’s honor student.

“I was always on schedule, so I never turned anything in late,” said Emerson, 18. “I always put in my best effort. I made a schedule and made sure I got everything done on time.”

The same could be said for graduating class representative Jacob Kano (18).

“I think preparation was key,” Jacob says. “I was always prepared for tests. I think I never procrastinated. I always started on time and never waited until the last minute.”

Not surprisingly, Jacob is a great achiever and multitasker.

While he was getting top grades in his classes, he also played football, participated in track and field, the PTA, the National Honor Society, and the Hope Squad. All of this, plus his top grades, shows the resourcefulness and discipline that will surely serve him well in the future.

Hope Squad is a student organization that seeks to help fellow students struggling with mental health issues.

He gave special thanks to his English teacher, Dustin Voss.

“My dad would always stay after school to help me with any questions I had,” Jacob said. “I want to thank God and my family for always supporting me.”

The influence of God, his teachers and his family was so strong that he plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in biology as part of a pre-med track.

Emerson thanks his parents for supporting him and will soon begin studying business administration at the University of Texas at Austin.

“It’s an amazing feeling to see my dreams come true and all my accomplishments come to fruition,” she said.

She also multitasked between her schoolwork and her participation in National Honor Society, National Technology Honor Society, Student Council and Hope Squad.

And she was a cheerleader.

“I was a cheerleader in college and we had practice that went on until very late,” she said. “Sometimes I had to stay up late, but I tried to balance it all by spending time with my family and friends.”
