The weather was perfect for Harbor Beach Community School’s Go Green Walk for Mental Health Awareness.
The event was hosted by Harbor Beach Community Hospital and planned and organized by school counselor Chelsea Tarasky.
“Today was a special day with activities focused on mental health,” Tarasky said. “It’s been a dream come true to see all the students here getting involved. So many of them now understand what mental health is and how to support good mental health and the mental health of others. I understand it better.”
Talasky said that in previous years, she went for a walk but didn’t do all the special activities that day. Tarasky and the school’s Active His Mind Club wanted to expand this day to promote positive mental health.
Harbor Beach Kindergarten through 5th grade principal Matt Quintano and 6th through 12th grade principal Aaron Burglien were excited to see their students outside and interacting with each other.
“It’s great to see K-12 supporting each other,” Bourgulien said. “I’m so grateful to Active Minds Club and Miss Chelsea for putting this together. Today, children are learning that mental health affects everyone and that they can protect themselves and others from their mental health. I learned how to support my health.”
“Days like today raise awareness about mental health,” Quintano said. “It makes it more common and helps our social and emotional learning. It helps kids learn that it’s okay to not be okay sometimes and that they can talk to a trusted friend or trusted adult if they need to.” It’s great to see what you can do.”
Superintendent Bill Tillman went out with students and talked about how important it is to have a mental health day.
“K-12 embodies what it means to live in a rural community and why people choose to raise their children, live their lives and receive an education here,” Chillman said. said. “Students not only learn reading, writing and arithmetic, they also learn the importance of good social skills and mental health.Staff have great relationships with students so they can learn in a safe and secure environment.
