Senior Life Solutions at Harbor Beach Community Hospital and the Huron County Suicide Prevention Coalition will once again be holding a Go Green Walk for Mental Health at Harbor Beach and Oubry schools on Tuesday, May 7th and Thursday, May 9th, to encourage mental health We support the spread of health awareness.
Susan Rochefort, program director and registered nurse, is excited for the school to participate.
“The school completely understands the concept of what we are trying to do,” Rochefort said. “Harbour Beach is dedicating an entire day to mental health, and Ubury is involving all of its students.”
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and this year marks the third annual Go Green Walk for Mental Health. A press release from Rochefort describes how organizations and programs across the county come together each year to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.
She added that over the past four to five years, she has noticed an increased need for mental health awareness.
On May 7 at 1:30 p.m., the first walk will begin at Harbor Beach High School and continue to Prescott Street Pier. Once there, students write positive messages and pictures on the sidewalk. On May 9th, the Wubley School walk will begin at the track and field, with the middle school walk starting at 1:30pm and the high school walk starting at 2:15pm.
Rochefort works as a member of Senior Life Solutions at Harbor Beach Regional Hospital and is part of the Huron County Suicide Prevention Coalition. Although she primarily focuses on older adults through her work, she knows that people of all ages struggle with mental health.
“We want to involve as many people in the community as possible,” Rochefort said. “Our goal is to get this information out to the public, and it’s great to know that the community and schools are participating.”
