Gnarly Sports Nutrition, a manufacturer of high-quality supplements and protein powders for all levels of performance, announced a bold commitment to eliminate plastic scoops from their product packaging, starting with their Hydrate line in May and expanding to the rest of their product lines over the next 12 months. The change will reduce plastic waste and make their packaging more sustainable.
“This initiative is an important part of our commitment to sustainability and reducing plastic waste, demonstrating that we’re not just putting our money where our mouth is, we’re putting our money where our mouth is,” said Dr. Shannon O’Grady, Gnarly’s chief executive officer. “To make the transition easier, we’ll be providing kitchen equivalents for all of our containers.”
Gnarly’s slogan is “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” The company uses recyclable materials in its product packaging, with steel cans leading the way. Steel cans have a 71% recycling rate, significantly higher than plastic’s mere 5%. In fact, two-thirds of new steel cans are made from recycled steel. Cans are also manufactured and sourced in the U.S., reducing the environmental costs of transportation.
“In 2020, we said, ‘Fuck plastic,’ and moved most of our products from plastic containers to metal cans,” O’Grady says. “Not only did this bring our products into small steel drums, it saved an estimated 39,000 pounds of plastic. By eliminating the scoops, we’ll save an additional 28,000 pounds of plastic per year. This is a no-brainer for our Mother Earth, and we trust our customers and communities understand that taking this step is a huge benefit to the planet. And they’re on board.”
Gnarly is committed to transparency in its sustainability efforts, publishing everything from its sourcing methods to its carbon reduction goals, and encouraging local residents to get involved in reducing plastic waste. If you still need a scoop, you can save one or purchase one on the Gnarly website for $1; 100% of the money will be donated to the Surfrider Foundation.
