Weeds can be a real nuisance for any gardener, especially when they start growing between your patio stones, but one woman has shared a simple homemade recipe to kill weeds in just an hour.
Weeds are a perennial scourge to the avid gardener. They tend to grow in the most undesirable places.
Weeds waste resources and often ruin the look of our precious green spaces. These unwelcome guests come in all sorts of forms. Technically, grass counts as a weed, but what really bothers us are the pesky weeds that grow between the stone slabs of our patio.
Not only are weeds an eyesore, but they can also cause structural damage if left unchecked for long. So how can you effectively get rid of these plant invaders? According to the Express, on the Mrs Hinch Gardening Tips Facebook page, one user shared how they used a simple concoction to quickly get rid of weeds from their patio.
Hannah Miller said: “Oh my gosh, I sprayed some weeds on my patio with vinegar, salt and dish soap and they were gone within an hour! Amazing! I can’t believe it worked so fast. I’m so pleased! I used just under a quart of water, a cup of salt and a tablespoon of dish soap. I first heard about this from another gardening group and wasn’t expecting it to work but it worked great!”
The post prompted a flurry of comments from group members, many of whom enthusiastically endorsed the method. Catherine McInnes confirmed: “I totally agree, I tried it and it worked within an hour. Amazing.” Mary McClure Whelan added her own success story: “I used undiluted vinegar on the weeds growing through my monoblock paving and it worked – they’re gone.”
Margaret Blair replied, “It works, I use it all the time,” and Julie Barnes chimed in, “It’s the only thing I use.” So what’s the secret to its effectiveness? Vinegar and salt are full of acetic acid, which sucks the moisture out of plants and causes them to wither.
Adding dish soap makes all the difference: The detergent acts as a surfactant, allowing the lethal chemicals to penetrate the pores of the leaves instead of sitting on their surface. For best results, give your pesky weeds a liberal dose of this homemade herbicide. It’s a bit of a blunt tool, though, so it won’t be able to distinguish between unwanted weeds and your precious petunias.
So if weeds start growing near green spaces you want to keep, you need to spray with precision.
