The German Society for Nutrition has updated its position on a vegan diet, claiming that it has a range of benefits.
The German Nutrition Agency (DGE) re-evaluated the non-animal diet before coming to its new conclusions.
The group says it now fully supports a vegan diet for the general public, saying it can be “health promoting” as long as it is “well planned”.
In addition, the German Society for Nutrition now recognizes other potential benefits from avoiding animal products.
This includes environmental benefits, with the association pointing out that “compared to the mixed diet with a high content of animal products currently common in Germany, a vegan diet can be considered more environmentally friendly.”
This is mainly because a plant-based diet has “great potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions”, the study explains.
This is a marked departure from the organisation’s previous position, which has been that it “does not recommend” a vegan diet for people it considers “vulnerable”, such as the elderly and infants.
