Plant Night was held on Friday, April 26th at the University of New Mexico Student Union. At this event, students received free plants and decorated their pots.
Art supplies for painting the pots were provided by SUB. Harsh Kumar and his family, a participant in the event, painted bright colors and nature on the pots.
Kumar’s family doesn’t often keep ornamental plants, which are grown more for appearance than functionality, he said. Instead, they spend their time caring for edible plants.
“We usually plant Indian plants. We have various vegetables like okra and chilli. This is the first time we are getting non-vegetables like this,” Kumar said.
Kumar was one of the random winners of a $25 gift card to Range Café. Prize numbers were written above saucers of various potted plants. Kumar was given a gift card when a SUB employee lifted the pot and revealed the prize number.
Mark Sanchez, SUB’s programming manager, said 200 small succulents were purchased from Home Depot for the event.
Those who didn’t win could still win a $25 Buffalo Wild Wings gift card through the Pot Decorating Challenge.
“We have painted things for people to display, and they will post on social media and tag us,” Sanchez said. “We’ll post everyone on a story, choose your favorite, and give away a gift card.”
According to SUB’s X, the winner of the pot decoration challenge will be announced next week. page (Formerly known as Twitter). The best pot will be decided by Sanchez and other SUB staff.
Many people gathered to get their hands on plants, and long lines formed when the event started. Those waiting in line could buy sweet drinks from his mobile dessert cafe, Bing Tea and Pop Pop’s.
Student Health and Counseling was featured at the event. According to Trey Holland, mental health and development specialist at SHAC, nature has many health benefits.
“Plants make an apartment or dorm room more beautiful. Just having something there to take care of, something outside of myself that I can nourish and watch grow, is so calming. ,” Holland said.
