May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. Now is a great time to highlight the important role that art plays as a therapeutic expression of all emotions for all people.
This May, the Fishers Arts Council (FAC) will be opening a new exhibit for Fishers residents called “Art That Heals: A Focus on Mental Health.” The exhibit, currently on view until May 31, is expressive, passionate, thoughtful, heart-wrenching, and cathartic for both artist and viewer. Explore different creative ways to free your thoughts and find ways to calm your mind. Everyone is on a different journey. However, through art, a person can find strength and independence that will help move in a positive direction.
“Inside Turmoil” by Caitlin Bischoff (art provided)
In “Art That Heals: A Focus on Mental Health,” 16 artists will share their work with the public, each with a story to tell about the positive impact their pursuit of art has had on their lives. Their art is diverse and beautiful, but at times alarming as their work reflects difficult times. Their art also shows that they address mental health issues in creating various works. The mediums they use are as diverse as the art itself and the people who created it.
The exhibition is comprised of small sculptures, bright and beautiful oil paintings and watercolor paintings, with a particular focus on water and its healing properties. One artist focused on portraits of people he likes and respects. Another artist created large textured acrylics in rainbow colors. Two artists painted an unfinished work that continues today. It then asks those viewing the art to add their own comments directly on the canvas. This exhibit is eclectic, fun, colorful and vibrant, and well worth a visit to the gallery.
