JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson Department of Social and Behavioral Services hosted a district-wide “Mental Health in May” event in the Hub City.

This month, there is an emphasis on finding the mental health care that best suits one’s needs, and SBSD is offering the Jackson-Madison County School District a variety of unique activities for staff to participate in during the May Mental Health Experience.

“We’re definitely going to have a section or area where people can learn to meditate if they’ve never meditated before. We’re also going to have gift bags with aromatherapy, relaxation tips, tips for kids and even adults about anxiety and stress and how to relieve it,” said Rhonda Bigham, director of Social and Behavioral Services.

Dr. Sharonda Franklin explains that mental health outreach is important for children and adults alike.
“In the school system, we’re focused on the students, but in our department, we’re focused on both the students and the staff and adults often get overlooked, so that’s what today’s event is about – focusing on adult mental health,” Franklin said.

The event supports Chancellor Marlon King’s “We Care” initiative, which focuses on employee wellness programs that empower individuals to give back to their communities.
“Dr. King has really emphasized the importance of employee health and well-being through many of his initiatives, particularly ‘We Care,'” said Jodi Joyner, chief communications and executive support officer.
It is important to keep your mental health in check to mitigate potential health concerns.
It’s also helpful to know what resources are available in your area, such as therapists, counselors, and crisis support.
