Thursday 9pm Gospel – historic Documentary/Culture
In this four-hour documentary, renowned scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. delves into the history of black religious music and preaching, showcasing the symbiotic relationship between word and song that exists in every black church.

From blues to hip-hop, African Americans have been a driving force in sonic innovation for more than a century. Musical styles may come and go, but from the Sunday pulpit to the choir stalls, there is one sound that has always been a source of strength, courage, and wisdom.
Gospel – Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s new documentary
Gospel Train – The first hour of Gospel takes you north to Chicago on the Gospel train. There, Southern immigrants Thomas A. Dorsey, Mahalia Jackson, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe combined the melodic sounds and instrumentation of blues and jazz with lyrics about God’s mercy. Like the blues, gospel became a commodity, but one built by black-owned publishers like Martin and Morris and championed by black audiences.

10pm The Golden Age of Gospel – Beginning in the 1940s, the second hour of gospel explores the golden age of gospel, through the successful careers of Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke, and Aretha Franklin, the dramatic explosion of black sacred music, and the segregated highways of the American South. Masu. As the lines between the sacred and the secular become blurred, gospel music has become a powerful soundtrack for freedom struggles.
