In honor of Earth Day, Food Systems for the Future, Environmental Defense Fund, and Food Tank will host a webinar on April 22 highlighting methane mitigation efforts in the food system. Speakers will also explore the impact of reduction strategies on nutrition security and the importance of relationship building to forge a sustainable path.
“Reducing emissions while ensuring nutritional security is essential to promoting both human and planetary health. To ensure a sustainable future for generations to come, we must must act now,” Ambassador Ursaline Cousin, founder and CEO of Food Systems for the Future, told Food Tank.
Methane is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases, accounting for 30 percent of climate warming and being 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide over 20 years, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration reports. Additionally, according to a report published by ClimateWorks, 60% of anthropogenic methane emissions come from food and agricultural systems.
Webinar participants will explore how the food system contributes to high rates of methane and identify barriers hindering industry progress towards reducing emissions. They will explore the link between health and climate, consider how methane reduction efforts affect nutrition, and concrete ways to meet both nutrition and climate goals. Speakers will also have the opportunity to discuss strategies to strengthen cooperation in the lead-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), scheduled to be held in autumn 2025.
The speakers are: Matthias Berninger, Executive VP of Public Relations, Science, Sustainability and HSE at Bayer AG, and Ertharin Cousin, Founder and CEO of Food Systems for the Future. Bruce Friedrich, Founder and President of the Good Food Institute. Britt Glusman, Vice President of Climate Smart Agriculture at the Environmental Defense Fund; Lisa Moon, President and CEO, Global Food Banking Network; Daniel Nirenberg, President, Food Tank; “Tyson Foods is proud to be a leader in the food industry,” said Kathryn F. Picus, Vice President of Sustainability and Global Impact at Tyson Foods.
