Although there is no conclusive data to support taking supplements to treat ED, some research suggests that some vitamins and herbal remedies may reduce ED symptoms.

vitamin D

Vitamin D is one of the most studied vitamins in treating ED. This is a steroid hormone that is associated with sexual function and cardiovascular health.

A 2020 analysis showed a significant association between lower vitamin D levels and ED severity. This suggests that low vitamin D levels may worsen symptoms compared to adequate vitamin D levels.

a 2016 survey Among 92 men with type 2 diabetes, those with low vitamin D levels had higher rates of ED and more severe ED symptoms than those with adequate levels.

nevertheless, 2019 analysis No significant association was shown between vitamin D deficiency and ED. However, the authors suggested that in addition to low vitamin D levels, ED symptoms may be increased in people who have chronic health conditions such as type 2 diabetes or heart disease.

Researchers believe that vitamin D may support ED by improving blood flow to the penis and supporting the production of sex hormones such as testosterone. This theory is promising, but further research is needed to confirm it.

If you or a loved one suspect that you have a vitamin D deficiency, you can have your levels checked by a health care professional. For most people, vitamin D levels can be easily balanced with vitamin D supplements.

Read our roundup of the best home vitamin D test kits.

Red ginseng

Red ginseng, or Panax ginseng, is sometimes called the “Viagra of herbs” because of its ability to help with ED.

Red ginseng contains compounds called ginsenosides, which may relax the smooth muscles of the penis to support an erection. Additionally, studies have shown that it may have a positive effect on preventing heart disease associated with ED.

One 2018 analysis showed a significant improvement in International Index of Erectile Dysfunction (IIEF) scores in people who used red ginseng compared to placebo. Erectile function and sexual satisfaction were also significantly improved.

A 2021 review showed a small improvement in ED symptoms, but the authors said the effects may not be clinically relevant.

However, further research is needed.

It’s also important to keep in mind that ginseng can interact with alcohol, caffeine, and some medications.

L-Arginine

L-Arginine is a natural amino acid that increases the production of nitric oxide, which helps promote erections.

One 2019 analysis Supplementation with 1,500 to 5,000 milligrams (mg) of L-arginine was shown to significantly improve IIEF scores. The authors concluded that L-arginine may be effective in treating mild to moderate ED.

a 2020 survey Similar ED improvements were seen when L-arginine was used alone or in combination with tadalafil, a prescription ED treatment.

L-carnitine

L-carnitine is an amino acid derivative that supports fat metabolism, sperm production, and cardiovascular health. It may support ED by improving blood flow to the penis.

in 2022 survey Researchers found in rats that L-carnitine allowed nerve recovery, prevented penile scarring, and improved penile erection.

a 2019 survey People who don’t respond to sildenafil (Viagra) may have low levels of L-carnitine and vitamin D, suggesting that supplements may improve the drug’s effectiveness.

Although this is promising, further clinical research is needed before L-carnitine can be recommended as a sole treatment.

Tribulus terrestris

Tribulus terrestris It is a small leafy plant that has been used as an aphrodisiac in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. There are various studies on it.

in 2017 surveyResearchers saw a significant improvement in IIEF scores after supplementing with tribestan (Tribulus terrestris, 1,500 mg per day) for 12 weeks. They noted that this may be an effective option for treating mild to moderate ED.

a 2016 review Despite studies on Tribulus terrestris Treatments for ED are not definitive, but may slightly improve symptoms. The authors concluded that more human clinical trials are needed.

however, 2022 survey More robust evidence was found in older men who are partially androgen deficient. Tribulus terrestris It helps increase testosterone levels and improve sexual function.

ED affects millions of people worldwide. Although effective medications and medical interventions are available, some people seek alternative therapies to treat or alleviate ED symptoms.

Some studies have shown that vitamin D, red ginseng, L-alanine, L-carnitine, Tribulus terrestris For the treatment of mild to moderate ED. In some cases, supplements can improve the effectiveness of ED medications such as Viagra.

Although promising, research into vitamins and supplements to treat ED is still in its early stages. Further research is needed before these supplements can be recommended as standalone treatments.

If you or a loved one would like to try using supplements to improve ED, it is best to consult a medical professional first.
