When a mental health crisis occurs, residents often have few options for how to respond. Some turn to the emergency room. But research shows that emergency rooms may not be the right environment for people experiencing a mental health crisis because of noise, crowds, and other anxiety-provoking stimuli.
In response to these concerns, Envision Unlimited, an integrated care organization serving people with intellectual, developmental and psychiatric disabilities throughout Chicagoland, Central Illinois – We launched the Living Room Program Flossmoor, Illinois As a welcome alternative to hospital emergency rooms.
This new mental health space, set in a living room environment, is a free program that promotes healthy habits for mental wellness and crisis prevention. The Living Room welcomes anyone experiencing panic attacks, severe depression, family or work-related issues, different types of trauma, or any other mental health issue.
“The goal of Envision Unlimited Living Room is to provide a safe, comfortable space where people experiencing mental illness can feel heard and supported in their community by peers with experience in the mental health system,” said Jean Shoubi, LCPC’s executive vice president of mental health and business development. “We aim to de-escalate crises, avoid hospitalizations, and help clients develop crisis response plans and access natural resources in their community.”
The space is staffed with mental health professionals, including Dr. Yvette Vásquez-Sanchez, a clinician trained in techniques to help program participants reduce stress and improve coping skills. The program also has recovery support specialists, or “peer mentors” with their own stories who can provide additional counseling and support to visitors.

The program is supported by federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds allocated to the Cook County Health Department and was created in partnership with NAMI South Suburban. Chicago and NAMI Illinois, the local chapter and statewide organization of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
