Cronenberg is cast member Vincent Cassel; diane krugerGuy Pearce, Sandrine Holt and Elizabeth Sanders were among those who hit the Croisette for the film’s premiere on Monday, and Cronenberg graced the red carpet in a pair of 1990s-style wraparound white-rimmed plastic sunglasses.

The film ended with three-and-a-half minutes of applause before Cronenberg took the microphone to thank the audience, explaining that it was the first time he’d seen the film in front of an audience, adding, “And it’s a totally different film.”
The film’s review was rather understated, appropriate for its themes of grief and death, and the connection to the director’s own experiences is made clear through Cassel’s character Karsh, who has close-cropped white hair that directly mirrors Cronenberg’s own hairstyle.
Cassel’s works Holy Shroud Karsh is a businessman grieving over the death of his wife, who builds a device (a high-tech shroud) that allows him to watch her body decompose in real time. Krueger plays three roles: his late wife, her sister, and a virtual CG-animated avatar. In an interview with The Hollywood ReporterThe German actress said that watching the film “made me think about my own mortality.”
The Shroud The piece was directly inspired by Cronenberg’s own grief over the loss of his wife, Carolyn, who passed away in 2017. As with all new films by the 81-year-old director, there is speculation: Holy Shroud It may be Cronenberg’s final film (though the director has neither confirmed nor denied this speculation).
This is Cronenberg’s seventh film in competition at Cannes, and the style of body horror he pioneered has cast a long shadow on the Croisette.
