About Elizabeth Arden
Legendary innovator and tireless entrepreneur Elizabeth Arden built American beauty a century ago. Born Florence Nightingale Graham, she traveled from rural Canada to New York City, where she opened the first Red Door Salon on Fifth Avenue in 1910.
Elizabeth Arden’s fundamental belief was that beauty should not be merely a cosmetic veneer, but an enlightened collaboration between science and nature. She lived by the belief that “it is the birthright of every woman to be beautiful.”
Arden developed skin care products that would benefit the skin, rather than hide it. Not only did she promote the concept of total beauty, which included careful skin care, nutrition and fitness, but she also persistently sought to incorporate a scientific approach to skin care formulations and sensible living.
Arden never compromised on her vision to create the best new products, packaging and services that women not only needed but wanted. Every product was inspired by Arden’s vision, from her cult-favorite Eight Hour Cream to her legendary Blue Grass fragrance and bold red lipstick to match the uniforms of women who served in the military during World War II.
Elizabeth Arden’s list of beauty innovations is long. She was the first to introduce eye makeup to American women and pioneered the invention of the “Makeover.” With the launch of Ardena Skin Tonic, the company became the first to incorporate its founder’s name into its product names. Ms. Arden developed the first travel-sized beauty products and was the first in the cosmetics industry to train and deploy a team of traveling demonstrators and salespeople.
By the 1930s, Ms. Arden had opened Red Door salons in most of the world’s fashion capitals, and she proudly acknowledged her achievement by declaring that only three American brands were known in every corner of the globe: Singer sewing machines, Coca-Cola, and Elizabeth Arden.
Through it all, Arden created both an empire and a new industry, and her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to innovation, quality and excellence remain the soul of the company today.
