The observation of the month of Shawwal (October in the Islamic calendar) determines the date of Eid al-Fitr. This year, Eid will be celebrated in India today, Thursday, April 11, 2024.

People begin the month of Ramadan with noble intentions and end it with gratitude and of course lots of food. Eid al-Fitr has been given the cultural label of “the festival of sweets” because of the sweet delicacies eaten. It is said that the people of Medina in Saudi Arabia started the custom of eating sweets on Eid al-Fitr. Take advantage of dates and honey, two easily available cooking ingredients, and try out different recipe ideas that you can prepare at home to make the end of this Ramadan special.

Five Eid festivals celebrate the end of Ramadan

  1. Mutton keema samosa
This is a festive snack where samosa sheets are stuffed with a spicy, smoky mutton filling and fried until golden brown and crispy. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, the spicy keemasala is an irresistible dish.
  2. mutton korma
A prestigious dish that blends mellow spices and flavorful meat. This Eid special dish is perfect as a main course and will leave your guests wanting more. The mutton is cooked until tender and juicy, and a blend of spices tantalizes your taste buds.
  3. Zarda Pulao
Shahi Zarda Pulao is a rich and creamy dish served during festivals, weddings and other special occasions. Loaded with ghee and dry fruits and flavored with saffron and rosewater, this rice is sure to be added to your festive menu. This delicious cardamom and saffron flavored sweet rice is the perfect addition to your Eid feast.
  4. Sheer Kurma
A traditional dessert that is always prepared during the Muslim Eid festival. Shea means milk in Persian and Kurma means date palm. This rich, creamy and sweet dish is made by combining fine vermicelli (sevai) with ghee, milk, dates and almonds.
  5. Firni
It is a typical Indian dessert made from milk and grains. This Mughlai dessert is fun to taste and easy to prepare. It’s flavored with saffron and cardamom, and sliced nuts add a delicious crunch. Phirni was originally served in an earthenware pot called mithi ke kulhad, or shakole.
