KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – When Megan Keck and her husband, Adam, started trying for a second baby, they thought it would be quick and easy.
“A month went by, nothing happened, then two, three, four, five months,” Megan said.
Megan began checking every box possible – seeing doctors, tracking her menstrual cycle, starting fertility treatments and researching natural ways to help her conceive – and that’s when she discovered fertility acupuncture.
“I was really skeptical at first,” Meghan admitted. “I was really desperate. I’d only been trying for six or seven months. I wanted it to work quickly.”
Megan immediately began treatment at the Tennessee Fertility Acupuncture Center, a Knoxville-based center that specializes in ancient healing techniques to help families conceive.
“If you can pluck your eyebrows, you can do acupuncture,” says Sarah Prater, acupuncturist and founder of the Tennessee Reproductive Acupuncture Center.
Prater said acupuncture increases patients’ blood flow and reduces stress.
“We treat couples across the full range of fertility treatments: couples trying to conceive naturally, couples using IVF, couples who have been trying for months,” Prater says.
After months of acupuncture and fertility treatments, Megan and Adam received good news: Megan was pregnant with twins.
“I had a faint positive reaction,” Megan said.
According to the World Health Organization, approximately one in six adults worldwide experience infertility, and acupuncture is an increasingly popular option for couples struggling with infertility.
Dr John Gordon of Rejoice Fertility said the feedback from patients who have tried acupuncture during fertility treatments has been positive, and he frequently refers patients to Prater’s services.
“If people feel like they can do something, whether it’s nutrition, whether it’s stress reduction, whether it’s something like acupuncture, I think that gives them peace of mind that they’re doing their part,” Gordon said.
Megan and Adam say they are glad the option is so close to home.
