Food video bloggers have become a popular way to discover new dining spots. Some feature great restaurants and street food stalls, but increasingly bizarre food combinations are also featured in online videos. Social media users have observed an increase in video bloggers giving excessive reviews to eateries that don’t necessarily serve quality or appetizing food. This strange trend has led to overhyped average places and people wasting money on disappointing meals. Some chefs, especially those who cook street food, seem to intentionally use strange ingredients to get attention on social media. As a result, many strange food videos go viral. Here are some of this week’s most unusual food combinations.
Momo omelet
Delhi is known for its lively streets and love for momos, but bold street food stalls have gotten creative and put quirky twists on the traditional food. Rather than serving it the traditional way, it is fried in butter until golden brown and poured with an omelet seasoned with 17 to 18 secret spices and vegetables. Once she puts on the fried momos, she flips the whole thing. Her seller explained that her daughter loves momos and she is confident that her momo omelet will also satisfy her daughter’s taste buds.
gulab jamun pizza
Tender gulab jamuns filled with sweet syrup hold a special place in our hearts. But one adventurous chef took the bold step of pairing gulab jamun with a cheesy pizza, and the internet was disgusted. This video shows the preparation of cheesy Gulab Jamun pizza. The process begins with the chef making the pizza dough, followed by a layer of sweet syrup on the base. Then add the crushed gulab jamun on top of the syrup coated dough. To add even more weirdness to the food, he puts a generous amount of cheese on the pizza before baking. The video doesn’t end there. The baked pizza is sliced into equal pieces and each slice is topped with a whole gulab jamun.
Manchurian Samosa
Samosas are usually enjoyed with green or sweet chutney, and sometimes with chickpea gravy, but one street vendor has set the internet abuzz with his unique creation: mamosa or Manchurian samosa. In the viral video, the vendor can be seen placing the samosas on a plate and flattening them with his hands. Then he adds two Manchurian balls on top and a generous amount of gravy. To enhance the taste, sellers add tamarind and mint chutney along with chopped onions before serving to customers.
dried fruit omelet
The omelet recipe was controversial due to its combination with dried fruit. This strange dish is made by a street food vendor in Gurgaon and they call it their winter special. In the video, the process begins with a man adding a slab of butter to a frying pan, followed by green chillies, onions and 10 eggs. Once the cooking is complete, the stall will serve you a plate of different vegetables and dried fruits along with some sauces. This unique combination of ingredients has sparked a debate among foodies online.
idli burger
Idli, along with dosa and uttapam, is a traditional South Indian dish often enjoyed at breakfast. However, there have been some experiments with this classic dish and the latest version is burger idli, much to the dismay of social media users. In the video, the vendor is seen slicing a large idli from the side. To make the dish appealing, he mixes schezwan sauce, mayonnaise and green chutney. The owner layers onions, tomatoes, green peppers, beets, grated cheese and carrots along with a secret masala in this bizarre dish for the filling. Finally, a bowl of warm sambar is plated with coconut, tomato and green chutney. While some may be intrigued by this fusion cuisine, the majority remain dissatisfied.
