There are many new, cutting-edge sunspot treatments on store shelves today. And yet Brits, especially older Brits, are doing little to prevent them.
New statistics reveal that only a fifth of people apply SPF every day, and of those, a third use a factor of less than 30. Shockingly, one in seven people don’t wear sunscreen at all, and just over half only use it when it’s clearly sunny.
This is shortsighted because the sun emits harmful rays all year round, even on cloudy and rainy days. Just because the sun isn’t beating down on your head doesn’t mean you can abandon your sun protection altogether. We know this, and yet, for too many people, it’s far down the beauty hit list.
And the older we get, the worse our habits become. 60 percent of people between the ages of 45 and 54 only use their SPF when the sun is shining. It is no wonder, then, that since the early 1990s, the incidence of melanoma skin cancer has declined among younger age groups, while its incidence has soared among older generations.
If you’re in your 50s, this increases to 102 percent. And why are so many of us still actively seeking a real tan? We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. There’s no point in throwing money at skin-strengthening drugs if we don’t take the only means available to us to prevent premature aging.
Kimberley Med, from retailer Face the Future, which commissioned the research in collaboration with YouGov, said: “If you’re not properly protecting your skin with a high SPF every day, sun damage is never ‘over’. “It continues with age.” It’s never too late to start using SPF. It gives your skin a chance to repair itself, prevents the accumulation of UV damage, and ultimately reduces the risk of skin cancer. ”
Inspired by this research, Face the Future will remove VAT from all sunscreen products until 31 May. The goal is to start using a high SPF year-round, regardless of the weather.
Superdrug will also waive these 20 charges on its branded sunscreen Solyte in support of the VAT Burn campaign (melanomafocus.org/vat-burn/). This is because we believe that SPF should be considered a health care necessity, not a beauty product. product.
No matter which brand you choose, you need to make sure it is applied properly. Only eight people who use a decent-strength SPF go to the trouble of reapplying it during the day. And aside from the odd spray, even I am guilty of this.
I start my day by applying a generous amount all over my face as a moisturizing base and wait 5-10 minutes for it to absorb before applying makeup.
Yes, you need patience. Still, the SPF is very advanced, very good, and tailored to my skin type, so I’m looking forward to testing all the new samples I have on my desk.
My current favorite is Mecca Cosmetica’s new To Save Face SPF50+ Brightening Sun Serum (£38, meccacosmetica.com). This serum smooths lines and hydrates with a triple niacinamide-enriched shield, while light-reflecting pearls melt into your skin for a glowing glow.
Thank you Farmer Sun Project Silky Calming Sun Stick SPF50+ (now £18.40, FacetheFuture.co.uk) is the pocket refreshment we all need.
Sustainable chemical avoidance company Jurlique’s new UV Defense SPF 50+ (£40, jurlique.co.uk) has been years in the making.
Finally, there’s a natural sunscreen that will please those who want to look great. Enriched with aloe vera extract and glycerin, it moisturizes and refreshes your skin. However, if your response is ‘£40 – I don’t think so’, then opt for Garnier’s excellent Ambre Soler Anti-Age Super UV Protection Cream SPF50 (£9.99, superdrug.com). Every home should have some.

The spring limited edition Joe Loves with Love from Positano (£135 for 100ml EDP, cultbeauty.co.uk) is already sold out on the brand’s website, with several flacons in the Belgravia store. That’s all that’s left. Joe His Malone’s concoction of orange oil, bergamot, and star anise is bright, refreshing, and as optimistic as the sun. The 59-year-old actress loves RoC Multi Correxion Hydrate + Plump Daily Moisturizer (£27.99, Boots) on set, especially for a “post-lunch touch-up.” She also reviews the line’s Dual Her Eye Cream (£39.99). Too many products target menopause and are not very effective.
it’s not. Charles Worthington’s Menoplex range is proven to counteract the effects of hormonal changes on the scalp, increasing volume and density while reducing hair loss.
The Charles Worthington MenoPlex Volume Shampoo and Repairing Conditioner (currently £5.99 each, boots.com) are particularly good.
The former is formulated with a special thickening polymer and doesn’t have the weird texture that comes with it.
The latter is lightweight yet enriched with hyaluronic acid and CW’s Plex Repair System, which reduces breakage by 90 percent. Your hair will look and feel soft, bouncy, and gorgeous.
