Doctor explains vitamins to combat hair loss and promote hair growth

Many people suffer from hair loss, but certain vitamins may help prevent it and promote new hair growth.

Doctors are looking at a range of vitamin supplements that could help promote hair growth and combat hair loss, a condition that affects millions of people in the UK, with as many as 15.4 million people thought to suffer from hair loss.

While it’s normal to lose 50-100 hairs each day, a variety of factors can cause more severe hair loss, including hormonal imbalance and hair loss due to stress.

The hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is known to shrink hair follicles and cause hair thinning, while the stress hormone cortisol can inhibit hair growth and cause hair thinning.

Dr Alexis Missick of UK Meds says there are multiple causes for hair loss. “Alopecia is a broad term that describes the loss of hair from different parts of the body, most commonly the scalp,” the expert said.

“Hair loss can be permanent or temporary and can be caused by a variety of conditions and factors. Hair loss is usually caused by genetics, hormones, medical conditions and some medications.

“Some people may experience increased hair loss after undergoing surgery. Although there aren’t many studies linking anesthesia to hair loss, it’s important to keep in mind that stress can cause temporary hair loss.”

Persistent hair loss or thinning can be a sign of health problems or nutritional deficiencies

She adds: “If you have to undergo a demanding medical procedure that involves anesthesia, the hair loss is more likely caused by stress than the anesthesia itself.”

She added that it’s common for women to experience hair loss during various hormonal cycles. “Postpartum hair loss is a common condition in women after giving birth,” she said.

“When a woman gives birth, hormonal fluctuations can cause hair follicles to go into the resting phase, which can lead to increased hair loss. The duration of postpartum hair loss varies from person to person. It can last from about 6 to 24 weeks, and rarely lasts longer than 15 months.”

If you are suffering from severe hair loss, consult a doctor. Persistent hair loss or thinning could be a sign of a health problem or nutritional deficiency.

Taking the following supplements may help people who suffer from hair loss. Research shows that these supplements may help improve hair quality and reduce hair loss.

1. Biotin

Biotin, an important B vitamin, plays a vital role in extracting energy and nutrients from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. A biotin deficiency can lead to hair loss, but don’t worry, taking a supplement can help promote hair growth.

However, there is no evidence that biotin supplements can promote hair growth in people without a biotin deficiency. Dr. Alexis Missick explained: “Biotin is an important vitamin for the growth and maintenance of hair and skin.”

“Some studies suggest that using biotin supplements may improve hair thickness and reduce hair loss.”

2. Zinc

Not having enough zinc in your body can lead to an imbalance of nutrients needed for healthy hair growth, which can lead to problems like hair loss. A zinc deficiency can lead to weaker hair follicles, thinner hair, and increased hair loss.

Speaking of zinc, Dr. Alexis Missick added: “Zinc is an essential mineral that is important for a variety of bodily functions, including the immune system and wound healing. Zinc also plays a role in the synthesis of keratin, the protein that makes up hair, skin, and nails.”

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, blocking the action of free radicals and helping to prevent the damage these reactions can cause to the body. With regards to vitamin C, Dr. Missick noted that although there is limited scientific evidence on the effectiveness of vitamin C on hair loss, it is essential for overall health and supports healthy hair growth.

4. Omega-3

Regarding omega-3s, hair experts said these fatty acids are essential for many bodily functions, including maintaining healthy hair and skin, and there is some research showing that omega-3s may boost hair health, especially if you’re struggling with hair loss.

However, it’s important to note that the evidence supporting this is currently limited. If you want to increase your fish oil intake, you can do so by making changes to your diet or by considering a supplement.

5. Iron

Speaking of iron, Dr. Missick further explained, “Iron is an essential mineral needed to produce hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to body tissues, including hair follicles. Iron deficiency can weaken hair follicles and make hair brittle, dry, and prone to breakage.”

6. Collagen

Discussing collagen, Dr. Missick noted, “There is evidence that collagen peptides (also known as CP) may promote hair growth. Two separate studies conducted by Fan et al. in 2022 looked at whether collagen taken from different sources could affect hair growth.”

“The results of these tests indicate that collagen may be a viable treatment option for promoting healthy hair growth in humans.”
