Orlando, Florida – 42% of Americans are obese. One in three people are overweight. There are a number of reasons for this – lack of exercise, eating too many processed foods, and genetics – but what you think you know about nutrition may be making the problem even worse.
Filling your stomach starts with filling your plate with food.
“We sometimes get confused about meal portions. A meal is the amount of food we choose to eat. A serving is defined,” says Steven Burrows, a lecturer in the School of Health Professions at the University of California, San Francisco.
But what’s different? Serving sizes are regulated by the FDA and can be found at the top of the Nutrition Facts label.
“Portion size is really important to make sure you’re not eating too much food,” Burrows explains.
Before you pour yourself a big bowl of cereal in the morning, know that one serving is typically one cup.
Another nutritional question: is natural sugar better for you than sugar?
Honey and maple syrup are thought to have antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, but they contain the same calories as sugar and have the same effects on your blood.
Next question: Are fresh fruits and vegetables better than frozen ones? Frozen ones are likely to contain more nutrients because they are frozen at their best.
And one more thing, don’t eat anything after 7pm, because research shows that it’s what you eat, not when you eat, that causes weight gain.
Do you believe that eating certain foods like grapefruit, cayenne pepper, and vinegar can help your body burn fat? This is also a mistake. According to a report by the Mayo Clinic, no food burns fat or helps you lose weight faster than others.
