Delhi Zoo authorities have introduced several natural methods to protect animals from bacterial and vector-borne diseases amid the monsoon, a zoo official said on Thursday.
“To keep the animals safe during the rainy season, necessary measures have been taken, including Ayurvedic and Indian home remedies like neem oil, turmeric and quicklime, which should protect the animals from insects like mosquitoes, midges and fleas,” Delhi Zoo director Sanjeet Kumar said. Hindu.
Neem oil is used as an herbal disinfectant and fly repellent, while turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which help treat itchy skin diseases, infections, wounds, foot pains and lesions and speed up healing, he added.
“The zoo authorities will spread quicklime on the waterlogged areas to ensure that they do not become breeding grounds for mosquitoes,” Kumar said.
Power was cut in several areas, including the zoo, following torrential rains in the national capital last week. “The power outage occurred after floodwater breached the zoo’s boundary wall from the Sundernagar side, submerging the substation and damaging transformers. Authorities have repaired the damaged boundary wall and other repairs are also in progress,” Kumar said, adding that barriers are being set up to prevent floodwaters from reaching the animal enclosures.
“The zoo also plans to purchase additional generators solely for gate operations, WiFi, control room and CCTV operations,” he said.
