As more people look to establish healthier habits to better support their physical and mental health, two local health experts are helping individuals and organizations learn how to incorporate holistic practices into their daily lives.
Michelle Kennedy of De Novo Wellness and Jen Wyckoff of Reiki Ranch teach meditation, Reiki, breathwork, sound baths and other treatments at Wyckoff’s Reiki Ranch in Garrettsville. “De nova” means new beginnings, a perfect name for Kennedy’s business, which inspired her to leave a career in finance and pursue holistic healing. Reiki is the Japanese name for “universal life force energy.” Wyckoff, a certified Reiki practitioner, uses Reiki to heal her human and animal clients. Her Reiki Ranch is home to a large population of rescued animals who benefit from and help the practitioners with their hands-on treatments.
As people seek to learn more about these “new” therapies, they learn that these therapies have been used around the world for hundreds of years. These therapies work on the mind, body, and spirit and can reduce stress and physical and emotional pain. In fact, many traditional medical practitioners today are incorporating holistic therapies. Reiki therapy is used in over 900 hospitals and health systems in the United States, including the Cleveland Clinic. The information shared there states that Reiki has been shown to support the body’s natural healing abilities and is therefore safe to use to supplement patients’ regular treatments and medications.
As the program’s popularity grew, Kennedy and Wyckoff searched for a new space where they could better serve their students. Because Reiki Ranch is also Jen’s family home, the increase in business added unnecessary stress to family life of having to keep a shared space in their home ready for students and the program. “We’re fortunate that our new space is always ‘on and ready,'” Jen said.
The new location, De Novo Wellness Heart Space, is conveniently located near the freeway in Mantua at 9222 State Route 44. “Our new space has a ‘zen’ feel, tucked away on acres of green space,” Kennedy says. “The space is cozy and comfortable with plenty of natural light and high ceilings.”
“A lot of my work focuses on self-awareness,” she said. Kennedy is a certified provider of stress and health assessments and practices what she preaches. “Self-awareness starts with recognizing your needs and then determining where those needs are emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually,” she explained. This work starts with finding practical, effective methods and practices for taking care of yourself.”
De Novo Wellness Heart Space is a welcoming place to meet and talk one-on-one while having a heart-to-heart connection. Additionally, Kennedy offers tuning fork services and human biofield programs to help create inner harmony.
Kennedy and Wyckoff’s students range in age and background, from retirees to students in their 20s. Kennedy’s “Compassion Fatigue” class is approved by the Ohio Nurses Association so participants can earn CEUs. “Caregivers, especially nurses, need to learn the importance of self-care,” Kennedy explains. “Just like when you’re on an airplane and you’re told to put your own oxygen mask on first before you can help those around you, nurses need to prioritize self-care in order to continue to serve others effectively.” This special program can be booked at De Novo Heart Space or by your facility or organization.
Wyckoff’s Reiki 1 and 2 workshops have been approved for CEU credit by the Holistic Nurses Association. The new space in Mantua is in a more central location and provides a dedicated space for the program. Longer programs, day retreats, and animal programs, including equine therapy, will continue to be held at Reiki Ranch in Garrettsville.
