School Nutrition is pleased to have won the Turnip the Beet Award, which recognizes outstanding sponsors of summer meal programs across the country. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced the 2023 winners, which will be presented to dedicated sponsors who provide appetizing, appealing, nutritious, and high-quality meals to children during the summer months.
Danielle Freeman, executive director of school nutrition, says her team always goes above and beyond to ensure students are eating healthy meals.
“Providing nutritious and delicious meals to our students is always our top priority, and summer meals are no exception. It doesn’t matter if it’s wax or a sandwich.”
Summer meals are critical to the lives of millions of our nation’s youth, and the risk of food insecurity increases during the summer months when the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and school breakfast programs are no longer available. These quality summer meals will help provide daily energy and keep kids healthy and ready to learn when they return to school in the fall.
The Turnip the Beet Award was created to highlight sponsors who go above and beyond to ensure children in their care receive nutritious, appetizing, high-quality meals. I did.
“We strive to feed more students each summer, and the quality of our food is what ensures repeat customers. We are honored to receive this award. We want them to be proud of Douglas County Schools and our community,” Freeman said.
