Cultural Approaches to Health and Wellness in Indian Country (GHWIC)CDC-RFA-DP24-0025 is a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for a cooperative agreement supported by the Healthy Tribes program of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Division of Population Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Approximately $20,710,060 available Annual Funding: CDC plans to award up to 30 grants ranging from $300,000 to $1,145,000. Implementation period runs from September 30, 2024 to September 29, 2029, depending on available funding. See page 7 of the NOFO for funding strategy.

Objectives of NOFO Our goal is to reduce health disparities and increase health equity among American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people. We want to improve the health of AI/AN people by reducing:

  • Mortality and disability rates From chronic illness.
  • Prevalence of commercial tobacco useprediabetes and diabetes, hypertension, obesity, oral disease, and other chronic disease risk factors and conditions.

This NOFO has three separate competitive components.

  • Component 1 (C1) It provides funding to 12 federally recognized tribes, including Alaska Native villages. (tribe/village), and up to four urban Indian organizations (UIO) implements strategies and activities for the prevention, management and control of chronic diseases within the community.
  • Component 2 (C2) Up to 13 Tribal organizations will receive funding. Tribal organizations will apply in one of the following grant locations:
    • There is a maximum of one tribal organization in each of the 12 Indian Health Service (IHS) administered regions, which supports all tribes/villages/UIOs and other tribal entities within the Indian Health Service (IHS) region (area).
    • A maximum of one tribal organization may support all 41 UIOs funded by the Indian Health Service (IHS).
      The Component 2 receiver performs two activities:
    • Use at least 50% of annual funding to provide grants to at least two tribes/villages/UIOs and other tribal entities within its grant area that are not C1 funded to implement C1 strategies and activities.
    • Provide training, technical assistance (TA), and support to all tribes/villages/UIOs and other tribal organizations within the award area, including:
      • C1 Strategies and Activities.
      • Policy, systems, and environment (PSE) changes that promote health and prevent chronic disease and its risk factors.
  • Component 3 (C3) Establish a Tribal Coordination Center for all GHWIC grantees to collaborate and share knowledge, with a focus on peer learning, sharing best practices, and coordinating national evaluations using Indigenous and Western methodologies.
