INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Candace Boyd Simmons, co-host of the Black Girls Eating podcast and the driving force behind Food Love Talk, is known for her unconventional take on food.

Candace stopped by WISH-TV on Friday to discuss innovative ways to keep kids healthy and satisfied over the summer with Daybreak anchor Jeremy Jenkins.

Candace is more than just a guest. She has become a fixture on our show and brings her expertise and enthusiasm every time she appears. She’s an advocate for eliminating desserts and eliminating food insecurity beyond her podcast and website, and her insights will be invaluable as we explore today’s topic.

As the school year ends and summer begins, parents are looking for nutritious options to keep their kids energized and nourished. Candace shares some tasty alternatives to traditional desserts to make snack time fun and healthy.

Fruit Kebabs with Yogurt Dip

Candace’s first suggestion is a fruit kebab, a colorful assortment of watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapes, and blueberries.

“If you put it on a skewer, kids will eat it,” she jokes, highlighting the snack’s popularity with children, and when dipped in yogurt, it’s a simple yet satisfying treat that parents can enjoy without worrying.

Instructions:

  • Large sliced fruit of your choice
  • Kebab skewers folded in half for small hands
  • Threading fruit onto a skewer
  • Served with vanilla yogurt

Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Popcorn Chips

Next up is Candice’s inventive fruit salsa, made with chopped watermelon, strawberries and cantaloupe, tossed with lime juice and a touch of honey for the perfect balance of sweet and tart.

Served with cinnamon popcorn chips, this dish is a flavorful twist on traditional chips and salsa that even the pickiest eaters are sure to love.

Instructions:

  • 1/3 cup chopped strawberries
  • 1/3 cup chopped mango/cantaloupe
  • 1/3 cup chopped pineapple
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 2 tablespoons watermelon juice
  • 1-2 drops of honey
  • Combine ingredients and stir well.
  • Serve with cinnamon popcorn or pita chips.

Yogurt fruit molds for chilled desserts

To beat the summer heat, Candice suggests freezing yogurt in fruit molds to create a refreshing, cold snack.

“When it’s hot outside, kids need to cool off,” she reminds us. In just 45 minutes, parents can whip up a batch of these cooling treats, making them a nutritious alternative to sugary popsicles.

Instructions:

  • Frozen yogurt
  • Pour the yogurt into molds and freeze until set.
  • Please eat it frozen.

Candace promises to bring you more healthful recipes every month, so you can expect plenty more cooking inspiration.

We’d like to thank Candace Boyd Simmons for sharing her expertise and passion for nutritious eating. With her creative snacks and dedication to wellness, she is truly making a difference in the lives of families around the world. Until next time, savor the good stuff and enjoy the joys of healthy indulgence.
