Last month, Shadowbox Pilates made its Hamptons debut on Montauk Highway in Watermill. We caught up with founder Amanda Duckstein ahead of opening day to talk about all the good things to come for Shadowbox Her Pilates. There is a link to that article. here. I took my first class this week, so let’s talk about it.
Shadowbox Pilates is located between Kissaki Sushi and The Clay Art Guild of The Hamptons. As you walk down the brick walkway in the center of the cottage and through the front door, you’ll be greeted by Amanda standing beneath a giant blue LED lion (SBP’s logo and mascot). SBP has 10 reformers that can be transformed into Pilates towers with just a few operations. Amanda and SBP also offer an infrared sauna hidden in a quiet room separate from the workout gallery.

I took their signature 50-minute Shadowbox Pilates class. This class consisted of 40 minutes of classic Reformer Pilates and his 10 minutes of shadow boxing. First of all, I would like to say that I slept very well after this training and woke up feeling sore but happy. I had never done shadow boxing before. I was nervous about taking part in shadow boxing, knowing that trying something new can be uncomfortable, but I ended up feeling very powerful. Shadow boxing is a type of aerobic exercise that involves sparring with an imaginary partner to practice a series of punches. Amanda wasn’t kidding when she prefaced the shadow boxing part with, “Now let’s get pounded!”
I have taken Pilates classes before Amanda opened Shadowbox Pilates and I have to say Amanda is the best of the best. Her ability to encourage those last few reps or that last 10 second hold is unparalleled and exactly what you want in a fitness instructor. Shadowbox What I love about Amanda’s Pilates classes is that she always pays attention to your form. If you come to her class with discomfort or pain, she has extensive knowledge of anatomy and extensive fitness experience and will tailor the class to fit her injury. If you’re looking for a low-impact, high-intensity class, I highly recommend checking out Water Her Mill’s Shadowbox Pilates.
See you under the giant blue lion!
