The coalition, which includes Black Minds Matter charities, the Center for Mental Health and Minds, and smaller grassroots organizations, has launched what it calls the Black Mental Health Manifesto.

The group said issues such as housing insecurity, unemployment and dropping out of school “are significant contributors to, and sometimes the cause of, mental illness.”
The report notes that “racism and discrimination are often at the heart of why Black people face inequalities, and calls for seeing racism as a structural and social determinant of health, including mental illness.” We have to accept that this is on the rise.”

Other recommendations include a call for a “comprehensive strategy to eradicate racism from society” and the appointment of a minister specifically to oversee such a strategy.
It added: “Appointed ministers must have powers across government departments, including DHSC, to ensure anti-racism across all government, including health and social care.”
The coalition also called on policymakers, academic institutions and funders to “actively invest in and engage in community research conducted by and for Black communities in meaningful ways.”
Speaking on behalf of the Coalition, Nisa Tsipochny said: “For too long, Black people have been expected to be responsible for high rates of poor mental health in their communities, ignoring the real drivers of racism and inequality.
“And when Black people struggle with their mental health, they are often forced to rely on mental health services that don’t meet their needs.
“Meanwhile, Black-led community organizations often have the solutions to improve mental health and prevent people from falling into crisis, but struggle with funding and resources.
“Despite all the words and promises, the failure to take decisive action, such as reforming the Mental Health Act, shows that black people’s mental health remains not a priority.
“Without concrete action to improve Black mental health and a clear plan to eradicate racism, generations of Black families will be held back from reaching their full potential.” will continue to be affected.
“Unleashing this potential is not only justice, it will also reduce pressure on mental health services and promote the success of society as a whole.

A government spokesperson said: “Everyone should be able to access the care they need, which is why we have increased spending on mental health by more than £4.7 billion in cash terms since 2018.”
“We are committed to reforming the Mental Health Act to address racial disparities in detention under the Act, as Parliament’s time allows. We are also piloting an advocacy service to help people better understand their rights.”
