The Carruth Counseling and Psychological Services Center, located at 390 Birch St. on the Evansdale campus, supports students’ mental health and well-being through a variety of resources on campus.
The center offers a walk-in visit service for students experiencing a mental health emergency.
Students who are not in a crisis situation can discuss their concerns one-on-one with a counselor through short-term counseling.
The Caruth Center also offers group counseling for students to connect with peers and therapists in a safe, confidential environment. These groups range from alumni support to mindfulness and meet once a week.
The Student Association Program (SAP) partners with the Carruth Center to provide services to students with alcohol and other drug-related problems.
SAP services include individual evaluation and counseling, psychoeducational group counseling, and online educational activities. Students interested in these services should contact the Carruth Center. schedule promise.
While the center primarily provides short-term care, clinicians work with students to identify local health care providers who can also meet their long-term clinical needs.
T. Ann Hawkins, director of the Caruth Center, said the organization’s goal is to provide around-the-clock care.
“We want to be in the same place as you,” Hawkins said. “We’re providing resources and support to students and making sure students know about our resources.”
Hawkins said students are more likely to do well in school when they receive mental health care, and the Caruth Center’s interpersonal therapy teaches students skills they can apply after graduation.
“We can’t eliminate stress from our lives, and we can’t keep running away from it,” says Cathy Servian, clinical director of the Caruth Center. “When we have a counseling session, we’re able to personally acknowledge discomfort and learn from it.”
Servian said clinicians offer healthy coping skills to students facing a range of issues, from grief to dealing with anxiety about upcoming presentations.
“Sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves. Maybe we’re so busy with our education programs. If something happens, we can help people get through the unexpected,” Servian said.
Students can collaborate with the Caruth Center by participating in its outreach programs, such as weekly bike tours. Adventure WV During the summer.

Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness, Hawkins said.
“We all need help. We all need support, we all need to be seen and we all need to be listened to,” Hawkins said.
