Vitamin D and vitamin B12 play important roles in human health. Vitamin D is essential for bones and teeth, the immune system, brain health, and regulating inflammation. Vitamin B12, on the other hand, is required for the formation of red blood cells and DNA. It also plays an important role in the function and development of the brain and nerve cells.

A 2022 study found a “significant relationship” between vitamin D deficiency and vitamin B12 deficiency. In some cases, research has found that vitamin D deficiency may also be present in cases of vitamin B12 deficiency. But how widespread is it?

According to Dr. Rakesh Gupta, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.vitamin D and vitamin B12 are two completely different nutrients that play different roles in the body.

“Deficiency of either vitamin can be detrimental to health, but The problem is that vitamin D deficiency does not directly cause vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin primarily involved in calcium absorption and promoting bone health. This is ingested through exposure to sunlight, certain foods, and dietary supplements. Vitamin B12, on the other hand, is a water-soluble vitamin that is essential for red blood cell formation, nerve function, and DNA synthesis. It is naturally found in animal foods such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy products,” Dr. Gupta said. financialexpress.com.

Although vitamin D deficiency does not directly cause vitamin B12 deficiency, he emphasized that certain underlying conditions and dietary patterns that contribute to vitamin D deficiency may also increase the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.

For example, people who follow a strict vegan or vegetarian diet that excludes animal products may be at risk for both vitamin D and vitamin B12 deficiencies, he said.

“Similarly, conditions that affect nutrient absorption, such as Crohn’s disease or celiac disease, can cause deficiencies in multiple vitamins and minerals, including vitamin D and vitamin B12. However, when these deficiencies occur The mechanisms are separate and distinct, and addressing one flaw will not necessarily resolve the other.”

Meanwhile, Dr Tushar Tayal, chief consultant, Department of Internal Medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, said that in people who are vitamin D deficient, absorption of the key vitamin B12 may be reduced, possibly due to changes in the gut flora and epithelium. It is claimed that there is. to its flaws.

“However, this correlation needs to be further studied,” Dr. Tayal said. financialexpress.com.
