Campus Recreation and Wellness group exercise instructors teach a variety of classes over 30 hours a week, giving Elon students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to get involved and invest in their physical health. Earlier this spring, several group exercise instructors had the unique opportunity to participate in FIT EXPO, or Southeast Collegiate Fitness Exp.The position is to continue to develop the skills honed on Elon’s campus and take that knowledge “outside the oak tree.”
FIT EXPO 2024 was hosted by East Carolina University, with more than 50 universities participating over the weekend, and 10 representatives of personal trainers and group exercise instructors from Elon University and Campus Recreation and Wellness.

Julia Ashbrook ’24 has served as a group exercise team leader for the past two years and was one of nine RecWell students who participated in FITEXPO. While she was at the conference, Ashbrook and others took classes, attended lectures, and observed other experts in the field, including Jody Sobel, assistant director of fitness programs. spent time.
Jody Sobel was welcomed to the campus recreation and wellness community last July for her first FIT EXPO with Elon. Although he was admittedly nervous, Sobel had the opportunity to present at FITEXPO this year. After being accepted for publication, Sobel’s research and preparation began. With over 560 attendees, her presentation on the personal trainer-client relationship reached an audience far beyond the campus recreation and wellness team of student employees.
Sobel’s relationships with student employees like Ashbrook have provided valuable real-world applications, experience and guidance. “This year has been the most stress-free year I’ve ever had as a team leader,” Ashbrook said. “My future after college is secure because I have great relationships with the professional staff. I feel secure knowing that Jody and the other professional staff have my best interests at heart. You can approach your future career with confidence.”
The FIT EXPO weekend provided Sobel with an opportunity to network and grow her skills, in addition to connecting with students outside of the Elon environment and providing a support system that lasts long after FIT EXPO ends. “This weekend taught me a lot about how much you can trust these guys and what they are capable of doing,” Sobel said.
