July 12, 2024 – Anti-aging products can be harmful to children’s health and damage their sensitive skin. Despite this, the skincare and beauty industry has not taken effective measures to prevent children from purchasing anti-aging products. In response, Congressman Alex Lee is leading an effort to call on the industry to address this issue.
About two months ago, 20 California state legislators sent a letter to the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC), a national trade group representing the beauty and skin care industry. The legislators urged the council to curb the alarming trend of children purchasing anti-aging skin care products. Although the industry had previously acknowledged that it “does not support the use of anti-aging products by children,” the PCPC has yet to respond to the letter from the state legislators as of July 10, 2024.
The letter is part of Rep. Lee’s broader effort to protect children from the risks of anti-aging products. Earlier this year, the congressman introduced legislation that would ban the sale of anti-aging products containing powerful active ingredients like retinol and alpha hydroxy acids to children under the age of 13.
“Anti-aging products have no benefit to children” Senator Lee said:“Kids are influenced by social media to use anti-aging products that are not suitable for their skin care needs, without knowing the potential consequences. The US’s multi-billion dollar beauty industry profits from the kids who buy and use these products. If the industry is serious about protecting the health and safety of young people, it should take concrete action to protect kids from the unnecessary risks of anti-aging products.”
