Vasco Ascolini
Born in Reggio Emilia, Vasco Ascolini began his career in 1965 as a photographer for the city’s three major theaters. He quickly established himself as a master of chiaroscuro, favoring photographs of onstage figures, theater lighting, architecture and museums. In all cases, his images are full of contrasts between deep blacks and stark whites, to the point where the subject gives way to a photographic symbol.
These themes are presented in the exhibition “Cabriès”, where Vasco Ascolini presents a new series with an unexpected and provocative title. From Anaxagoras to Star TrekA frequent visitor to the Oceanographic Museum in Paris, he defined a world where the visionary attitude of the photographer-artist conflicted with the simple gaze of a visitor interested in the epic tales of the naval fleet.
Cesare di Liborio
A dark room on the banks of the River Erebus
Overall, Ade The series exudes an apocalyptic atmosphere. Parallels of distressed landscapes, where minerals mingle with plants, rub shoulders with animal skeletons and strange statuary fragments. The photographic material is treated like paint, with layers and streaks that recall certain paintings by Max Ernst, and the backgrounds of the images are layered on the panels like Robert Rauschenberg’s screen prints. Cesare Di Liborio intervenes directly in the silvery layers of the photographs, creating conditions of erased or overloaded visibility, faded tones or accentuated darkness. His work as a photographer essentially focuses on the signifying material of the image, with a specific purpose: to show how the signifying material of the photograph can be interpreted as a hallucinatory force.
