Darlene Heywood, owner of DH Essence of Wellness, says Pilates workouts are great for everyone, from young to old. The Pilates method is a series of rehabilitation exercises aimed at bringing balance between body and mind. It was created by Joseph Pilates (1880-1967), a German-born physical trainer, author, and inventor who developed a method of physical fitness for rehabilitation patients in the 1920s. He also patented 26 devices.
During World War I, Pilates was interned by British forces on the Isle of Man, where he worked as a nurse and experimented with attaching springs to hospital beds to strengthen patients’ muscles. This led to the development of his first Pilates machine.
Darlene offers duet sessions: 50 minute private sessions for $50 and 45 minute personal training sessions for $40. She also offers virtual group sessions for her $20 per person for 50 minutes. Each class includes strength, stamina, mobility, and stability techniques to help you become more aware of your body. Over time, her clients can expect to shorten recovery times, prevent injuries, and reduce emergency room visits.
Darlene is busy working with many clients including NFL player Kingsley Enagbare of the Green Bay Packers and other athletes such as competitive golfers. She also works twice a week as a performance specialist at her Activcore Physical Therapy & Performance Studio in Atlanta.
She holds Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced level mat certifications, as well as a 500-hour Classic Pilates Equipment Certification. She earned her certification under the guidance, guidance, and leadership of Juliette Harvey, President of Beacon Pilates in Beacon, New York. Darlene is a graduate of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach.
For those interested in Pilates techniques, Darlene is sponsoring “Pilates on the Square” on Tuesday, May 14th on the lawn of the Monroe County Courthouse. The outdoor event is free and open to the public and begins at 6:30 p.m. Participants should bring a mat, wear comfortable clothing, and be sure to bring water. Darlene is a proud member of Twaliga County Line Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, where she serves in the health ministry and as part of the church leadership team. She grew up in Brooklyn and came to Monroe County from New York in 2017 with her husband, James Haywood, who received a Purple Heart during the Vietnam conflict.
