Bowie, Maryland — A Bowie man hit the jackpot in the Maryland Lottery’s Pick 5 game on Friday, turning a routine errand into a $50,000 windfall.
The Prince George’s County resident, who frequently plays Pick 4 and Pick 5, was picking up some vitamins for his wife when he decided to stop by Hilltop Wine and Spirits, where he bought a regular game and a few $1 straight Pick 5 quick pick tickets.
“I checked the winning numbers on the website and they looked very familiar,” the winner said. “I immediately checked my ticket and sure enough, I had won.”
The financial analyst, who asked to remain anonymous, was shocked to find out he’d won, and only told his wife privately so as not to surprise their children during family dinner.
When he received his winnings this week, he said he plans to use the money to pay bills and buy a car for his daughter. Hilltop Wine & Spirits, at 6856 Race Track Road, will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

New Jersey congressman hypes Trump’s threats to democracy
Just days after the assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald J. Trump, a New Jersey congresswoman continues to spread the false narrative of a Democratic “threat to democracy” to her constituents.
New Jersey Rep. Miki Sherrill expressed concern about former President Donald Trump’s impact on democracy, especially given his stances on a range of political and social issues.
At the planned event, Sherrill was expected to rally New Jersey Democrats against President Trump’s resurgence since the July 13 assassination attempt, and to stress the need to defend democracy and resist policies seen as harmful, such as restrictions on reproductive rights.
She said Trump’s actions and rhetoric are antithetical to New Jersey’s values and promote “fear, division and chaos.”
The only division and turmoil in American politics right now is within her own party, as a Democratic coup is underway to pressure President Joe Biden, duly elected by the American people in the June primaries, to halt his reelection campaign.
Sherrill has been a vocal opponent of Biden and has called on him to stop his current political activities.
In addition, Sherrill has been an active participant in political debates regarding the stability and direction of American democracy. During her political career, she initially hesitated to support the impeachment of President Trump, but changed her position following allegations regarding President Trump’s ties with Ukraine. She later supported a second impeachment following the attack on the Capitol, arguing that it was to protect democratic values and national security.
Portraying Trump as a threat is consistent with her broader political positions and activism, including her participation in efforts to strengthen far-left processes and norms.
