On Friday, July 12th, the City of Birmingham will be teaming up with community partners to host a Mental Health Awareness Day in Lynn Park from 10am to 2pm, where attendees will have access to free resources and the opportunity to discuss a topic that many people are often reluctant to touch on: mental health.

This year marks the third year that Crystal Maren Johnson, a licensed clinical social worker and founder of Nurture Alabama, has hosted the event in collaboration with the City of Birmingham to eliminate stigma surrounding mental health.
“The purpose of this event is to openly discuss mental health and provide support to those who need it,” Maren Johnson said.
Attendees can speak with mental health professionals, enjoy local food trucks and a DJ, get free depression testing and enjoy free massages. Members of the UAB football team will be on hand for an autograph signing session after 12:30 p.m.
“Mental health and wellness are too often ignored in our community. Mental Health Awareness Day is our opportunity to change that and highlight the importance of mental health,” said Mayor Randall L. Woodfin.
“Please take the time to learn with us, embrace self-care, and understand that you are valuable in every way.”
Sometimes, people going through difficult times just appreciate a supportive conversation. They may want to talk about their hurt or pain, but their friends may not know how to respond. Professionals can help guide people to getting help for themselves and others, Maren Johnson said.
Speakers on stage include:
- Alexandria Means, domestic violence expert
- Beverly Johnson of the Alabama Department of Mental Health
- Dr. Hernando Carter, general practitioner
Interactive sessions include:
- Yoga therapist Jamela Strode talks about how breathing techniques can improve responses to trauma triggers
