Taurine Magnesium is a common dietary supplement. This chemical complex consists of the mineral magnesium and the amino acid taurine.

There is some evidence that magnesium taurate can help treat a variety of health conditions, including high blood pressure (hypertension), cataracts, diabetes, and anxiety. It also helps protect your eyes, heart, and overall brain health. However, research on the benefits of magnesium taurine is limited and ongoing.

The available evidence for the benefits of magnesium taurine comes primarily from animal studies. This means that magnesium taurine may help lower blood pressure, improve heart health, regulate insulin sensitivity, prevent and treat cataracts, reduce anxiety, and manage the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI). suggests.

Magnesium is known to regulate blood pressure. Many people with high blood pressure try to take magnesium supplements or increase their intake of magnesium-rich foods such as avocados, nuts, and fatty fish.

Some people prefer to take magnesium taurine over magnesium alone because it is more easily absorbed and has fewer side effects such as diarrhea. A 2019 animal study found that administering magnesium taurine to rats with high blood pressure significantly lowered blood pressure.

Perhaps because high blood pressure is an important risk factor for developing cataracts, magnesium supplementation may help prevent cataracts and stop them from worsening.

A 2016 animal study found that magnesium taurine was effective in halting cataract progression, the process by which cataracts form. In addition to lowering the subjects’ blood pressure, magnesium taurine worked to reduce the level of oxidative damage in the eyes. This is thought to be due to the antioxidant effect of taurine.

Early research shows that magnesium taurine may improve cognitive function and help treat certain neurological disorders.

For example, a 2020 animal study found that magnesium taurine helps with recovery after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Taurine magnesium supplementation accelerated tissue healing processes and improved several aspects of brain structure and function (such as the ability to show empathy) in subjects after head trauma.

Many people take magnesium supplements to relieve tension, reduce anxiety, and reduce stress. A 2019 study found that magnesium taurine was particularly effective at reducing anxiety compared to other magnesium compounds.

Magnesium taurine is not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is usually available as an over-the-counter (OTC) dietary supplement to be taken orally. They are commonly found in pharmacies, drug stores, online retailers, and health food stores.

Dose

There is no specific recommended dosage for Magnesium Taurine as it is not regulated by the FDA. However, the U.S. Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) has set the recommended daily upper limit for magnesium supplements at 350 milligrams (mg) for adults. Most taurine magnesium supplements are available in doses between 100 and 500 mg.

Taurine magnesium is generally safe and well tolerated by most people. Many people choose to take it because it often has fewer side effects than other supplements containing magnesium.

However, magnesium taurine can cause side effects if taken in excess. It may also interact with other supplements and medications. This may cause side effects or make the treatment less effective. Before trying magnesium taurine, it is important to let your healthcare provider know about any other medications you are currently taking.

Potential drug interactions

Magnesium supplements may interact with the following drugs:

  • Blood pressure medicine: Magnesium supplements can lower blood pressure, so taking them with other blood pressure medications can cause hypotension (low blood pressure).
  • Antibiotics: Taking magnesium supplements at the same time as antibiotics, such as doxycycline, can make them less effective at fighting infections.
  • Diuretics: Lasix (furosemide) and certain other diuretics can reduce the effectiveness of magnesium supplements.
  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs): Some PPIs, such as Prevacid (lansoprazole), can dangerously lower serum magnesium levels. Magnesium supplements may not be as effective if taken in the same way as PPIs.
  • Medications for osteoporosis: Certain medications prescribed to treat osteoporosis, such as Fosamax (alendronate), become less effective when taken with magnesium supplements.

Taurine may also interact with:

  • caffeine: Taurine is often used as an ingredient in energy drinks that contain caffeine. Consuming large amounts can increase certain side effects of caffeine, such as increased heart rate.
  • Insulin: Because taurine lowers blood sugar levels, it can cause hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar) in people who also take insulin.

Can you take too much Magnesium Taurine?

Taking more than 350 mg of magnesium per day in supplement form may cause side effects.

In rare cases, magnesium toxicity can occur if serum (blood) magnesium levels become very high. This can occur if he ingests more than 5,000 mg of magnesium at one time. Symptoms of magnesium toxicity include:

  • hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • inability to urinate
  • facial flushing
  • arrhythmia
  • difficulty breathing
  • muscle weakness
  • dizzy
  • confusion

If you have kidney disease, you are more likely to experience symptoms of magnesium toxicity because your kidneys normally eliminate excess magnesium from your body. Although very rare, magnesium toxicity can be fatal if left untreated.

Possible side effects of magnesium supplements include:

Taurine is not known to cause many side effects. Since this is a naturally occurring amino acid, taking supplements containing it usually does not have any negative effects on your health. However, some people who take taurine in multivitamin or mineral supplement drinks have reported gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea and vomiting. It can also cause excessive urination.

Taurine Magnesium is a dietary supplement with several potential health benefits. Research suggests it may help lower blood pressure, regulate blood sugar levels, reduce anxiety, and protect against damage from cataracts, heart disease, and traumatic brain injury.
