Gone are the days when summer was a fun season of hitting the beach and enjoying ice creams. Due to massive climate change and increasing global warming, heat waves arrived in India quite early and have been continuing ever since. This deadly weather is very harmful to your gut health and hence you need to take extra precautions.
Ayurveda is an ancient natural medicine from India that helps in maintaining gut health and digestive system simply and effectively. To know more about this, we spoke to Vaidya Shaishav Pandey, Specialist Ayurvedic Consultant, Baidhanath Research Foundation. Here are some Ayurvedic tips to keep your stomach thriving during the sweltering heat.
Ayurvedic tips for gut health this summer
Drink a cold drink
During the heatwaves, make sure you stay properly hydrated for good digestion. Experts say, “Ayurveda recommends cold drinks like aloe vera juice, wheatgrass juice and herbal teas made with aloe vera, ginger and coriander.” These drinks cool the body, balance doshas (defects), control fever and metabolism and stabilise the digestive fire (agni).
Eat light and fresh food
Eat light, easily digestible foods, including fruits like watermelon, cucumber, grapes, etc. Include green leafy vegetables, zucchini, and asparagus in your diet and avoid heavy, oily, and spicy dishes that may increase body heat.
Use cooling herbs and spices
Herbs like basil (tulsi), neem and cumin (sauf) have a cooling effect on the intestines. Make a refreshing herbal tea with these spices and savour every sip.

Practice Mindful Eating
Experts say, “Ayurveda emphasises on the importance of mindful eating. Avoid overeating and try to eat your meals at the same time every day. Chew your food thoroughly and enjoy every bite.” This helps improve digestion and prevents problems like bloating and indigestion. You can also take Ayurvedic churan to smooth the digestive process.
Do some light exercise
Our experts recommend: “Moderate exercise like yoga or walking stimulates agni and aids digestion. Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest hours of the day to prevent overheating and dehydration.”
These Ayurvedic tips will help you maintain fluid and hydration in your body despite the rising temperatures: Keeping your gut in good condition is key to keeping your body healthy during summers.
