Chennai: Ayurvedic doctor Shivan Nar, 72, and his wife, Prasanna Kumari, 62, a former teacher, were killed on Sunday at their home clinic in Mittanamari, Avadi region. Police have arrested T. Magesh (20), a resident of Jodhpur, on suspicion of murder. According to a TOI report, they tracked him using the mobile phone he left at the crime scene.
Sivan Nair was found dead at around 6pm by a patient who arrived at the clinic. Nair was found dead lying in a pool of blood near the balcony. His wife was found dead inside her house.
The patient had also reportedly informed his son Hari Om and other people in the local area.
Mutapudupet police have registered a case of murder. The body was sent to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. Police also recovered a mobile phone linked to Magesh.
The couple’s son, Hari Om, who is himself an Ayurvedic doctor, was suspicious of Mahesh, saying his mother had been complaining about the young man for about two weeks. He said Magesh used to visit his parents at odd hours and embarrass his parents by asking for money. Magesh, who works at a hardware store in KK Nagar, had been receiving treatment for a stomach ailment at the couple’s clinic since 2019.
“In the past two weeks, Prasanna Kumari became suspicious of his activities. She did not allow him inside the house and asked him to collect medicines from outside,” said Abadi police. Deputy General Manager Ayman Jamal said.
Police said Magesh got into an argument with Prasanna Kumari and subsequently killed her. Shivan Nair rushed in hearing his wife’s screams and was killed by Magesh. Magesh managed to escape on a motorcycle taxi. The incident was captured on a surveillance camera.
Magesh told police that he was repeatedly insulted and irritated in front of other patients. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
Sreekumar, the couple’s neighbor, said the couple spoke softly. He added that they are always ready to help local people.
