Padma Shri award winner and diabetes specialist Dr. V. Mohan came across a multivitamin advertisement that he thought was misleading. He let his followers know the same about X, claiming that “there is nothing called multivitamin deficiency.” He also added that “multivitamins are not sufficient to replenish vitamin deficiencies.”
Dr. Mohan criticized the American multivitamin brand Centrum, writing: Unless you are deficient in certain vitamins. Taking vitamin D, vitamin B12, and multivitamins may not be beneficial and may even cause harm. Multivitamins are usually not sufficient to replenish vitamin deficiencies. ”
At the same time, he also tagged Dr Babu KV, a doctor from Kerala who challenged Patanjali’s misleading advertisement and won. However, Dr. Babu has not responded to this post.
The ad says: “8 out of 10 Indians may be multivitamin deficient. The whole family needs the right amount of multivitamins along with their daily meals. However, their daily diet is not truly balanced. Do you think so? That’s why families should take a daily multivitamin.
The company brands itself as the “World’s No. 1 Multivitamin Brand.”
As well as Dr Mohan, pediatrician Dr Arun Gupta also condemned the ad, calling it “misleading”. He writes: “Most of you are undernourished. The government believes that malnutrition does not exist. Are you misleading? If so, why can’t we clearly state advertising guidelines for such claims?”
“Look at the vegetables surrounding nutritional deficiency claims. And there are also claims about health, immunity, eye health, digestion in children, strong joints, heart, immunity and overall health for people over 50. ” he added.
Dr. Gupta further added, “Handing over health and nutrition to the market could increase risks to health. It is not helpful. Policies need to consider this aspect.”
How did people react to these posts?
“Multivitamin deficiency means that you may be deficient in vitamin D3 and B12 at the same time, and you may also be deficient in vitamin D3 and B12, so you may need to supplement them at the same time. means,” one person posted.
Dr. Mohan replied to this comment. “But in that case, you would need even more of the deficient vitamin, and that amount may not be available in a multivitamin tablet or capsule,” he explained. Also, it is necessary to replenish only the vitamins that are deficient. Giving all other vitamins and minerals regularly when there is no deficiency can actually cause harm. ”
Another poster tagged FSSAI and the Minister of Health and Family Welfare and expressed, “Do you have any comment on this misleading advertisement published in newspapers across India?”
Some people flocked to the comments section to thank the doctors for bringing the issue to light.
