Celebrating Yoga in North AttleboroLast Saturday morning, dozens of local and out-of-state residents gathered at North Attleboro High School’s renovated athletic field for a community yoga and meditation event celebrating International Yoga Day. There were beginner classes, meditation sessions, and a short discussion on the benefits of yoga and meditation led by a certified instructor. The event was sponsored by nonprofit organization Breathing Secrets of North Attleboro. “We’ve had people who have always wanted to try yoga and meditation, but are afraid to try because they don’t know the names of the poses, the breathing techniques, or how to do…

A new study has found that taking a daily multivitamin does not increase life expectancy and may actually increase the risk of premature death. Published in JAMA Network Open, the study analyzed nearly 400,000 healthy adults over 20 years and found that “the use of multivitamins to extend lifespan is not supported.” Shockingly, far from living longer, people who took multivitamins were 4% more likely to die than those who didn’t take them at all, the researchers say. For the study, Dr. Erica Loftfield of the National Cancer Institute in Maryland and colleagues analyzed data from three major US health…
A coalition of flour millers has launched a programme to fortify wheat and maize flour, edible oil and rice with essential micronutrients. The millers’ nutrition programme aims to combat micronutrient deficiencies among Kenyans. Under the programme, millers and food processors who do not meet industry fortification standards, including emerging millers, rural small-scale millers and small-scale millers, will receive technical assistance on food fortification. They will be trained on how to prepare high-quality premixes (a mix of grains and micronutrients) and use uncontaminated grains. According to the World Health Organization, fortification is the practice of intentionally increasing the content of one…

The food and drink industry is being called on to invest in producing and promoting children’s foods that are nutritious, safe, affordable and sustainable and that are low in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats. This follows a recent child nutrition report by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), which found worryingly high levels of ultra-processed foods and drinks consumed by young children in low- and middle-income countries. Ultra-processed foods and beverages are produced using industrial processes and are typically low in essential nutrients and high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats. They are widely available, cheap, convenient and…
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Telehealth visits have expanded rapidly in the medical field since the pandemic, and even in 2024, telemedicine is still pretty popular. One LSU graduate seized the opportunity and turned her passion for nutrition into what is essentially a private business, which she called Harvesting Nutrition LLC. “My passion journey started in an unhealthy way,” Elizabeth Courville-Rayford said. Courville Rayford is a registered dietitian in South Louisiana who first became interested in nutrition when she was 16 years old. “I became fixated on what we would now call nutritional misinformation and developed some very poor eating…
Attachments A survey of knowledge, attitudes and perceptions regarding mental health and psychological issues among adolescents in Rohingya refugee camps and host communities background As the Rohingya refugee crisis drags on, the mental health and wellbeing of refugees and host community members, particularly adolescents, remains a pressing concern. Factors such as violence, prolonged displacement, limited resources and lack of access to quality mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services are severely impacting their wellbeing.
