Attention to mental health in the office leads to more prayer and meditation rooms

Perhaps never before has office space been under more scrutiny than it is today. The rise of remote and hybrid work and the economic downturn are causing all businesses to take a harder look at what they can cut to reduce footprint and costs. Many office occupiers don’t want to have extra space unless they have big plans for future growth. Nevertheless, there is a growing need for a type of office space that serves a very specific purpose. Since the pandemic shined a light on mental health, more companies are adding meditation and prayer rooms to their offices as they focus on health and wellness in the workplace.

Last year, the U.S. Surgeon General sounded the alarm on workplace health conditions, detailing that long hours, limited autonomy, and low pay may be key contributors to the country’s mental health crisis. Announced new guidelines. A 2022 survey conducted by the American Psychological Association found that 39% of workers report that their work environment is having a negative impact on their mental health. “As we recover from the worst of the pandemic, we have the opportunity and power to promote mental health and well-being in the workplace,” said U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. Having space for prayer, meditation, and relaxation is what her office users are asking for. In a recent study conducted by office furniture manufacturer Steelcase, more than 90% of people surveyed said they needed a casual space for charging.

Designing these spaces means considering the specific needs of the people who will be using them. Prayer rooms are typically nondenominational and designed to accommodate individuals of all faiths and traditions. A prayer room, sometimes renamed a “quiet room” to make it more inclusive, must have enough space to accommodate a prayer mat and an Islamic It can be designed in a more comprehensive way by adding an ablution site for use by believers. Wash before praying.

Companies that have recently built such facilities include e-commerce giant Amazon. Amazon has built three prayer rooms with separate areas for men and women and an ablution site at a recently opened sorting facility in an area of Minnesota with a large Somali population. His Gogo, an in-flight internet provider, built a prayer and health room with ablution stations at its Chicago headquarters.

There are now even companies that manufacture prefabricated structures for meditation and relaxation. Miami-based startup Open Seed is developing meditation pods that can be built into office spaces to provide users with aromatherapy, light therapy, and immersive audio. The pods are used in the office spaces of major companies such as Deloitte, Morgan Stanley, and Optum. “Not everyone prays, but some people may want to take some time for themselves, and that might be meditation,” says Carlos, managing director and workplace design leader at Gensler.・Mr. Martinez said.

Private rooms for prayer, meditation, and breastfeeding are common on college campuses and are becoming more common at industry conferences. The Urban Land Institute (ULI), one of the world’s largest real estate industry groups, designates rooms for prayer and meditation at its spring and fall annual conferences and uses provider Mamava to provide breastfeeding support. We also offer a private her area. designs freestanding nursing pods commonly found in airports and other public spaces.

Private spaces often serve a dual role. Prayer rooms are very common in Dubai, with separate spaces for men and women, and the rooms are often used as breastfeeding spaces. “This is not the first time we’ve seen women adapt to breastfeeding environments,” said Dr. Whitney Austin Gray, senior vice president of research at the International Well Building Institute. We are advocating for more support for lactation rooms. It always existed. You’ll never meet a mother who says, “I don’t want to do this at work.” ”

It has long been common for offices to have a private space, or lactation room, for women to express breast milk during the day. Although the proportion of women in offices has increased significantly since the 1970s, it wasn’t until 2010 that an amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act required companies with 50 or more employees to provide private spaces where women can express their breasts. That was it. Recently, many states have passed legislation that further strengthens nurses’ rights in the workplace. While it is often thought that this kind of dedicated space only benefits a certain subset of building users, experts believe this is not the case. “In fact, everyone can benefit from a nursing room, quiet space, and dedicated space to relax and recuperate,” Gray says.

She pointed to the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which became law in 1990. Since then, buildings have been required to be designed to be accessible to all, including people with disabilities. Ramps and elevators may have been designed and added to help people in wheelchairs, but people soon realize that the additions will help parents with strollers, delivery workers, people with temporary disabilities, etc. I’ve noticed that it’s also helpful for people who use crutches. “While it may seem difficult and not worth the space at first, it’s a win-win for everyone,” Gray says.

Mental health has become a huge issue in the United States in recent years, and the pandemic has made it worse. Thankfully, the stigma around this issue has changed dramatically in recent decades, and more resources are now available to those seeking help. Offices, where millions of Americans spend nearly half of their waking lives, support workers’ mental health and accommodate religious practices by creating dedicated spaces for prayer, meditation, and relaxation. is in a favorable position. Research shows that the overwhelming majority of employees want a quiet space to recharge, and these days, keeping tenants in a building requires keeping them happy and staying in their own space. is the most important.
